About Howard Soldan 'Senior'

A tribute to our founder, Howard Soldan ‘Senior’

Howard Soldan, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. He was born in Gladwin, Michigan May 29, 1927, the youngest of nine children. He graduated from Gladwin High School, and worked briefly on Mackinac Island before being drafted into the Marine Corps at the end of the World War II.  He was stationed in Tsing Tao China to guard Japanese prisoners.

On returning stateside, Howard worked at the Wohlert Corporation in Lansing, Michigan, where he met his future wife, Erna. They were married June 2, 1951.  Howard, always the entrepreneur, purchased Ruhf’s Feed Store on South Logan St. (now MLK Jr. Blvd.) in 1955. Howard’s gift of making deals and his mastery of customer service made his little store a beacon in the Lansing area.

Senior loved horses, and was a coachman when he lived on Mackinaw Island. In his later years, he was often found feeding the giant Carp on the Grand River behind his house with his grandkids. He loved taking his wife Erna out to eat. They always took the back roads, and would sing old songs and hymns together. Today, Erna cares for their three-legged kitty ‘Charlene’ that they adopted from the Capital Area Humane Society.

We are so honored to have been founded by such a loving and caring individual like Howard.
